Assembley of window and rubber

Since I got my package from the states, I've been trying to fit the rubber. The outer rubber on the pop-outs was really hard to fit, so I had to give it up for a while. Instead I tried to fit the rubber and chrome on the rear windows, and it wasn't easy either... but I managed to do it :)

There's almos nothing as funny as getting packages :) And look what arrived from across the Atlantic Ocean... new rubber for the windows. But before the rubber, chrome and windows is getting joined togheter, the b, c and d pillars need new vinyl.

I cleaned the interior panels and glued some of the parts where the trim had got loose. Adjusted and fitted new padding to the c-pillars of the car.

Today I got some more or less period correct tools :) One stroboscope timing light and one dwell tachometer. My old timing light was broken, so this was a great gift. The tachometer is an analog one, so it will look a lot better together with the squareback than my fancy digital one ;)

More action from the 71 bus, and it's driver Vemund. Not the fastest car on the track this weekend, actually it was the slowest. But the smile on Vemunds face was one of the largest (The CSP team and Ron Lumus had the largest I think... when they finally got the Razoredge roaming down the strip).

Best pal Vemund let his original firebus loose on the tracks of Gardermoen International Raceway today, at the SCC race n' show (www.sccevent.com). Check out the video... not the fastest bus in the world, but oh what fun! (stock 1600 dualport engine, and stock transmission). Rear brakes overhauled

Changed/cleaned rear brakes and oilseals. There had been a leak of transmission oil, so everything smelled like sh...! And with four new tyres the car is as safe as it can be :)

Last night we installed the last of the windows into the car. Sadly we broke some of the rubber seals, but they'll do the trick for now. Today I'll have a go at the electrics... lights, wipers etg.

Just finished to shoot the first layer of primer. It was also my first time using a spraygun, so I'm excited to see the result tomorrow. There were to much fumes and primer in the air, and the primer hadn't dried when I left, so I couldn't see the result tonight.

I had hopes of spraying a layer of primer today... but I had to do put some more filler on the body (and sand most of it off again). Also ended up removing some "rustremover paint"... because it was something wrong with it, so it wouldn't stick to the metall. Tomorrow I'll try to spray the first layer.

Bought paint and filler/primer yesterday, and removed windows today. Should be able to spray the first layer in a couple of days. Also ordered some rubber, wing beading and clips for interior panels.

Finally we have come so far, so we could start the engine. Of course I forgot I had removed the power to the coil and the spark plug cables... so it didn't fire straight away ;) After we got that sorted out... it came alive.YouTube Video

Got the final things sorted out today, and the car is back on all four wheels. Gas tank in place... looking good now. Before I refill brake fluid, I'll take at the rear brakes. As the pictures show... there's need for some cleaning.

Wheel bearings etc

Installed the new wheel bearings, and got the front brake disc back on the front axle :) Put the brake fluid reservoir and brake lines, just need to get some new brake hoses. Started to sort out the electric system, but got a feeling that this is going to take some time. Also installed a new HD and Ubuntu on the garage computer :)

Since it was a holliday in Norway, I spent the day working on the Squareback :) Cleaned and prepared the spare wheel well for painting. Also removed the wheel bearings from the front discs. Since I changed the front axle to a 68-or-newer the spindles is larger, so I need new bearings. Also cleaned and painted the discs.

Prep'ing for the paintjob

Took a day of from work today... and went to the garage. There have been many hours spent there during the last month, and some progress have been made. But most of it ain't visible. Today I removed the old sound/vibration damper in the drivers door, and replaced it with a new one. We did the passanger door earlier. And I did some more sanding...

We removed the front axle, so we can fit a new one (broke some bolts on the old one, so it's just easier too change it). Lots of surface rust is remover from all over the car, and the new front axle is cleaned.

After many hours of welding, Finn-Erik is finnaly able to push the squareback out of his garage. There where rot in the usual places, and he fabricated parts to get the job done :) So, yesterday we picked up the car. Next was a safe arrivel at Vemunds garage, where the final work will be done during the coming months. My goal is to show the car on the first weekend of july, on the VW

RetroSound in the states makes nice car stereo's and speakers. They look pretty classic, but are in fact fm/am radios and mp3 players. The speakers have 2 connections, one for left side and one for the right side... "stereo" with just one speaker. Spot is going to a new home

Both a good and a sad day... we decided that Spot had to go, so all fundings and time could be used on the Squarback. So the sad part is that I had to let it go, and the good is that I didn't need to send it to a junkyard. It got a new home, and will live on!A memory from the day I bought Spot. The previous owner is also on the picture (he's also my uncle)

Finally we drove the squareback to the welder, and hopefully it's ready before christmas :) Maybe even faster, it all depends on how much time we have to do the work. The verdict so far is that it ain't to much work, and most of the welding is done in places that no one will ever see :)

Last year I bought some 2-litre replica wheels, that was to be used on the squareback. But since it's still not on the road... and I also want gas burners on it instead, Spot got to use them:Finally, I installed the custom dial on the taco... but now the taco doesn't work, so I'll have to check it out. We're finished cleaning the tents, and today we tried to get it assembled. It wasn't easy at first, but when we finally understood how it should be... it went pretty smooth. Tomorrow we have to disassemble it, and sand down the wood, and give it a nice layer of laquer.

First the brakes... then the generator

The brakes are now ok, but a week ago my generator failed. I finally got it changed today, but it wasn't a pleasant job since its 30 degrees outside... and thats not what we're used to in Norway :P The new front seats have been mounted, and they are just awesome! Tomorrow I'll have to start the work with the new front wings, as the car MUST be ready for the VW Internationals show this weekend.

Lost all brake preassure two weeks ago on Spot, but since it's dual circuit it didn't create any dangerous situation. Found a leak on the breakpipe inside the car, it made a real mess. Changed the pipe, but then I found out that the hydraulic cylinder on the left rear wheel leaked. I also have to change the oil seal and bearings on the rear wheel, so I'll do it while the brake drum is off.What I

Today I got some help from Einar and Vemund, and we picked up the Heinemann combi-camp I got for free from a neighbour :) It's pretty big actually, so the beetle looks small compared to it. But it should look just right behinf the Squarback! There are some work to do on it, but nothing that can't be done by ourselves.

Custom tacho dial

Just finished the design of my custom tachometer dial (for Spot)... I'm pretty pleased with it, and hope it'll look as good in the car as on my computer :) The tacho is a dirt-cheap one, but it should fit the car now. Just have to figure out what to print it with, and what to print it on.

New exhaust in place!

Didn't get the time to do it before today, but now it's done :) It was way easier to install than it would have been to install a NOS one... it was easy to access all the bolts. And the fit was perfect, so Danish exhausts are great! I have tried a Brazilian made exhaust on the beetle, and the fit was terrible, and rust... oh lord... As usual, here's some pics:

Yesterday I painted the final coat on the exhaust parts, and today I'll assemble it (at least that's the plan ;) ). The heat resistant paint got a really nice finish, and hopefully longtime protection.

Started to strip out the luggage compartment yesterday. As this car is mainly a summer car, I'm going to remove the petrol heater. The only things left are the wiring harnes for the front lights and indicators. It's obvious that the car has had som acidents in the past, so som metalwork had to be done. Knocked out som dents, and as this was my first shot at it... it didn't go terribly wrong :)

Av de tre alkoholfrie jeg har testet så er dette den som kommer nærmest ordentlig juleøl. Den er merkbart fyldigere enn vanlig Munkholm, og kan godt brukes til en fet og god julemiddag. Men for min egen del så vil jeg nok heller satse på Munkholm sin Münchener til dette, den er både mørk og fyldig med en god smak.

I got my new 34 pic-3 reproduction carb yesterday, and it's nice to have something new and shiny in Spot (the rest of the engine is parts I had lying around). Since it got two vacum ports I'll give it a shot with Spots original distributor, which also have two vacum ports :) I don't have time this weekend, so it'll have too wait for another week.

There's actually some progress on the Squarback, or more presicly on the bumpers :) Started with some polishing today, but there's plenty more. Next year... it may be back on the road (and at least the bumpers will be shining).

I recently bought "How to paint your car on a budget" from Amazon, and recommended it to Vemund... and look, he bought it to :) It's the best book about car painting I've seen so far. And it's actually written so you can do it on a budget... other "home painting" books goes on about a lot of expensive stuff you really don't need.

I've been bizzy the last days as you can see :) I've started to clean and polish the lights on the Squerback. It's clear that all the rubber has to go, 40 years has taken its toll it seems. Also started dismantling of the bumpers, and they're also in need of a good cleaning and polish.

There haven't been many updates lately, but there is progress inn the Garage. Wings and bumpers have been taken off the car. Have also started to remove paint and stuff... Brrr... it's getting colder, and I wouldn't be surprised if it's coming snow soon. But the Spot is fitted with winter tyres, and the heat is pretty good. I'm hoping to connect the petrol heater as soon as possible though...The project in the garage these days is the Varian (Squareback). I've started to dismantle it, and the goal is to have it back on the road for the summer... so stay tuned :D

Trouble again, this time the bearings in the disc on the left front wheel was broken, and the disc most probably wasn't straight. So, an new (used, but got it cheap) disc with brand new bearings was installed yesterday... and man... once again I can enjoy my ride :)I've also in the prosess of getting the lowering aproved by "biltilsynet", the norwegian trafic administration. That should be fun..

We did it! After a pretty long afternoon, we finished assembley of beam and brakes. Got no time to take pictures, but the result is what it's all about :) Since Spot sits on 5,5" Sprintstars with 185 tyres he got too low... Anyone got 4,5" Sprintstars?

Found some cool info on Wikipedia about Bumblebee, the "not so beetle looking toy". Why it's cool... well I remembered that I have a old transformers toy, a golden bug... and in the Wikipedia article it's called Goldbug (form 1987)... :) (maybe I'm a geek?)"Goldbug" should be easy to spot here? A strong wind had blown the left door out of my hands some while ago, leaving a ugly dent in the door. Originaly the plan was to swap doors, so we painted the spare one last weekend togheter with the rest of the car. Saturday it was time for the 2 layers of coat, with the color L91D Kansasbeige. So good to see the car in it's original color, without rust and spots. Altough the spots is gone, the car is still going to be named Spot! Tomorrow we're going to paint the new drivers door on the inside. But we'll probably wait until monday before we re-assamble the car.

In heavy rain or much snow I've had trouble with water inside the car, behind the passenger seat. Friday while preparing the car we found the reason... A hole behind the right front wheel. This have now been taken care of :)(not show finish, but good enough for a daily-driver)

The donor car wasn't used the past 10 years... We split the calipers apart, and filled every possible gap with corrosion-remover. We'll see in a couple of days if there is any hope. Preparing disc-brakes

Today I have been blasting and painting the parts for the disc-brake conversion. I've also painted the adjustable front beam. (I didn't do the painting myself, thanx to DeLuxe60 for the help).
